Operation Susanna Operation Susanna was a sabotage operation planned by
Israeli military intelligence (AMAN) in July 1954 and directed against American and British institutions in Egypt.
The idea was to use an underground network consisting of Egyptian Jews recruited by Israel to carry out a series of terrorist attacks against American and British institutions in Cairo and Alexandria in such a way that suspicion would fall on the Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood, communists, or nationalist groups. In this way, Israel hoped to disrupt Egypt's negotiations with Great Britain on the withdrawal of British troops from the Suez Canal zone. The departure of the British from the strategic zone was not in the interests of Israel's military security, as it placed Israel under direct threat from Egypt.
The operation was thwarted by the Egyptian secret services, and the organizers of the terrorist attack were arrested, tried in an Egyptian court, and convicted. The operation caused a political scandal in Israel that lasted from 1954 to 1960 and became known as the “
Lavon Affair”, while the operation itself was dubbed the “Shameful Affair” (Eshek Bish — Hebrew: עסק ביש).
