The Mi-34M1 (Mil) light helicopter with a new domestic VK-650V engine made its first flight
The car will occupy a niche that has so far been filled only by foreign models. Russian Helicopters has begun flight testing a prototype of the Mi-34M1 multi-purpose helicopter equipped with a Russian-made VK-650V engine developed by United Engine Corporation (both companies are part of Rostec State Corporation).
The aircraft was flown by Sergey Barkov, a test pilot at the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center, part of Russian Helicopters.
"This is another major event for the domestic aircraft industry, proving that Russia is capable of building aircraft of various types. The Mi-34M1 is highly maneuverable, easy to fly and maintain. The helicopter is equipped with a gas turbine power plant and modern onboard systems manufactured in Russia. The main purpose of this machine is passenger transport, monitoring, flight training, and aviation sports," commented Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation.
The heart of the machine is the modern VK-650V engine developed and manufactured by ODK-Klimov. During the flight, the power plant performed normally, demonstrating reliable operation with all helicopter systems. Its technical characteristics will improve the helicopter's operational capabilities. The VK-650V has already been certified and is ready for serial production, which will allow foreign designs to be replaced on light helicopters.

During the flight, the stability and controllability of the Mi-34M1 were tested, and the loads on the helicopter's main units were determined in horizontal flight mode with turns.

The VK-650V is the first Russian-made engine for light helicopters with a takeoff weight of up to 4 tons. The engine's power in takeoff mode is 650 hp, and its specific fuel consumption in takeoff mode is 245 g/l. hp*h. The main advantages of the VK-650V are its modular design, high service life, and FADEC digital automatic control system.
