ReCAPTCHA alternative

Fellow fediversants,
I need some help to recommend the right tool for «Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart»
I have not much knowledge on that matter but I have somebody at Bleep.com that seems to listen to my privacy concerns regarding Google's ReCAPTCHA (at least they asked me if I could recommend an alternative).

So far I've found hCaptcha - Stop more bots. Start protecting privacy., which seems to be a good alternative... but before I start spreading my semi-knowledge, I'd love to hear some opinions or recommendations from more skilled fediversants.

Especially the first point — Do you really need reCaptcha? — is worth pondering. Most sites don't, but since it's easy and "free" (you only give away the soul of your visitors) many web admins just slap it on without thinking about it.
