Fascinating evolution and migration of the word "kitchen" from the latin word "cocina" and all other variants.

A linguistic map of Europe showing the etymology and evolution of the word "kitchen" across various languages. The map uses arrows to trace how different words spread and evolved, with influences from Latin (cocina), West Germanic (kukina), and Slavic (kuxnja). Red arrows indicate Romance language evolution, while orange arrows trace Germanic and Slavic developments. Insets show related words in Zulu, Japanese, Malagasy, and Tagalog.

And then, the Basques are there in their little corner between France and Spain saying "Sukalde" (Literally "Beside the fire") being the language outliers we are.

people may wonder how the Malagasy "lakozy" comes from the French "cuisine". As someone who lived on Madagascar for a while, I can shed some light. Many borrowed words in Malagasy include the article, so make that "la cuisine". Next, the letter O is pronounced U. Lastly, the stress is on the last syllable here, so the whole thing is pronounced 'lakooZEE', which is a lot closer than what English speakers are going to read unprepared.

I'll shed some light, too.
In January 1897, France declared Madagascar a colony. The policy of pacification of the island lasted about 15 years. About 100,000 Malagasy became victims of repression by the French colonial administration.

Lithuanian is “virtuvė”.
I wonder what other places held off the “Roman onslaught” and what their lineages are?
