@Mike Macgirvin 🖥️ No, but Mastodonians sometimes demand Fediblocks for the most ridiculous reasons. I wouldn't rule out such measures against instances whose users behave in too non-Mastodon ways, and whose admins/mods don't do anything against it.

Streams supports 'Report'. It's a standard object type specifically for this purpose.

I haven't seen any.

The "fediverse" is changing. Or, probably more accurately, it is morphing into the "social web." This means new participants and new ideas.

Sure, you will have some admins that block instances at the drop of a hat (for petty things like posting more than 500 characters), but as more and more people join the social web, there will be pressure to keep things open.

Imagine an admin running an email server who decides to ban Gmail. Only die hard anti-corporate people would accept that. Most people just want to talk to other people without being blocked by an admin over petty or political reasons.

"Sorry, your mom posted more than 500 characters and used bold in her posts, so we are blocking her."

Think of it this way. If some admin blocked you from talking to your friends and family members for some petty reason, you'd probably switch to a different server or platform. Most people wouldn't put up with that.

The social web, and by extension the fediverse, is becoming more diverse and more popular. If Mastodon, or anyone, blocked giant pieces of the social web for petty reasons, it would be at their own peril in the long run. People would just go to platforms that allow them to actually speak to their uncle, who has weird political ideas but is still family.

We are starting to get to the point where ActivityPub is being treated more like email (SMTP, IMAP, etc.), and what we know as the fediverse today will be only one part of the social web.

So, I don't worry about it too much.

On the other hand, about 99.9% of them join the Social Web through vanilla Mastodon instances, so their initial experience of the Fediverse/the Social Web is microblogging with no more than 500 characters. It actually comes to them as a surprise that there's more to the Fediverse than that, and it usually does so after months.

To be frank, a lot of people are in their own information bubble and then are shocked that outsiders don't do things the same way. This phenomenon is not limited to Mastodon. Just travelling outside of their city or state or country or circle of friends would shock some people. It just indicates that they need to expand their horizons because their limited view of the world is not accurate, and not everyone thinks like them. To put it politely, it is just naivety. Exposing them to new ideas is a good thing. That is the only way they will learn. And if they put their head in the sand, that is their loss, because reality does not yield to false notions.

Besides, a lot of other platforms are growing quickly. I think that WordPress and forums will quickly outpace Mastodon, as both are moving to become fediverse-enabled.
