Microsoft, Apple, Google, and hundreds of tech companies accelerate push to eliminate passwords, supporting standards developed by the FIDO Alliance and the W3C , so I'm starting a
new thread:Two observations at this point:
1) I have probably already registered and authenticated many times with the providers using FDO-based registration procedures. Without suspecting that the FIDO protocol is used. I have also never noticed the FIDO Alliance until today.
2) I could not find any articles on the website of the FIDO Alliance
https://fidoalliance.org/ and elsewhere on the Internet that shed light on how FIDO and "self sovereign identity" (SSI) concepts relate to each other, influence each other reciprocally.
After all, the FIDO project and SSI are both about realizing
secure communication and secure authentication. Whereas the
members of the FIDO alliance have agreed on the
necessary protocols for this, the
SSI concept explicitly focuses on a
self-determined identity. In my understanding,
I create an self sovereign identity identity with a password-based registration if I have chosen the password myself.FIDO protocols therefore ensure that an identity - e.g. - a self-sovereign identity - can act comfortably in the digital space - register, identify itself, initiate and transact business. Admittedly, now that I have thought about the interplay between FIDO protocols and the SSI concept, I have a better understanding of what SSI application scenarios look like in practice.
