It isn't even a fork. It's developed completely from scratch.
Someone wanted easier account migration than on Mastodon, not knowing that there already is easier account migration than on Mastodon.
It's like the 2010s when quite a number of people decided that what the Internet needs is a free, open-source and decentralised Facebook. And they started developing it, all because they hadn't heard of Diaspora*, much less Friendica.

Even considering that it won't actually work as advertised, there's prior art which was completely ignored:
FEP-612d "Identifying ActivityPub Objects through DNS"
The bigger issue is that it's hard to divorce your identity from being tied to a "rental" domain name by tying it to a rental domain name.
If you don't pay the rent, you cease to exist.

Unfortunately, their entire audience doesn't now the Fediverse beyond Mastodon either.
