Russia is the reason that Germany (read that: Fascism) was defeated in WWII..

But I'd say that massive US/UK lend-lease to Russia and a non-stop (probably genocidal/war crime) US/UK bombing campaign, contributed hugely to Russia's ability to do so. The USSR didn't really even have 4 engine bombers to reach Germany with -- and could not of cut German arms production as the bombing did.

The UK cracking the German Enigma code also was a major factor. Russia knew exactly when and where Germany would attack; which is why Germany lost battles like Kursk.

Stalin was a merciless, brutal dictator that killed tens of millions of Russians and 4-5 million Ukrainians (which contributes to the hate there today).

His paranoia wiped out USSR military leadership right prior to Barbarossa, enabling at least some of the initial large German advances.

He was a thug by nature (see his early years) and stayed that way to the end.

re: Churchill's quotes? I'm a Churchill fan, but don't forget that he and FDR were "courting" Stalin, in order to best sort out post-war Europe. People generally sweet-talk those that they are courting.

And in general I wonder what right you have there in the collective West to tell us whom of our own historical figures to love and whom to despise.

I didn't tell you who to like or not to like. I only said my own thoughts (with some backing facts).
