I would put the failure well before Stalin's dead, even before Lenin's. The systematic elimination of anarchists, the repression of Kronstadt and the Makhnovchtchina are more obvious start

It was thanks to organized communities with ideological communist leaders that the development of the state was possible. And it was the inability of the organizers (the apparatus of state management) to properly organize the system that ruined it.

And by the way, the anarchists and the Kronstadt were suppressed by the provisional government, not the Bolsheviks (communists)

The Makhnovists were simply gangs of criminals who robbed and killed indiscriminately.
