How to describe images in the Fediverse: Don't always blame frontend developers!

Don't always blame frontend developers!

A common reaction to pages in this wiki is that people refuse to change their ways. Instead, frontend developers must adapt all frontends to their ways.

That's the same as refusing to add a wheelchair ramp to stairs as a store owner and instead demanding all wheelchair manufacturers build all their wheelchairs in such a way that they can roll up and down stairs. Where I come from, this is not only called "selfish", but also "ableist". This is every bit as bad as not describing your images at all and demanding all Fediverse software include some AI that automatically describes images.

So if I tell you to put explanations and other additional information into the post text and not into the alt-text and to not write around your 500-character limit by putting extra stuff into the alt-text because not everyone can access alt-text, stop blaming the developers of Fediverse frontends that don't offer alt-text access by keyboard for your misbehaviour.

If you want to blame something or someone, blame the Mastodon developers for oh-so-staunchly refusing to raise the default character limit to at least a few thousand so you no longer have to write around that measly 500-character limit anymore. Or flip them the bird, leave Mastodon altogether and move to something else in the Fediverse like Sharkey that does give you many more characters.
