https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Expeditionary_Force,_SiberiaOn 23 December 1917 the British and French governments had agreed upon a division of responsibility for Southern Russia....
The British and French governments had agreed on an intervention in Southern Russia (solely for humanitarian purposes of protection against aggression by the Central Powers). They divided action zones between them, who robbed the bazaar, who robbed the railway station. The French got Bessarabia, Ukraine and the Crimea.
The British got the Caucasus and territories along the Don and Kuban rivers.
(The United States would join the fun a little later - President Wilson's Fourteen Points, imbued with calls for peace and justice, would not prevent American troops from disembarking in Arkhangelsk in May 1918...).
It was this decision to intervene that set in motion the mechanism of the Russian Civil War. (Until then, the Bolshevik revolution had gone almost bloodless, taking at times anecdotal forms...)
But the Civil War would be very serious.
Population losses (according to the Erlichmann's handbook) - 10.5 million dead, killed, died of wounds, epidemics, famine. (A couple of million more had emigrated, supplying staff for Parisian taxi firms and Istanbul brothels...)
A drop in industrial production - most likely to the level of units of percent of the level of the legendary year 1913.
Four to seven million street children.
A monstrous decline in national morality, ingeniously described in Leonid Leonov's novel The Thief.
The accumulation of mutual grudges and scores...
Such a present Russia received from the Entente cordiale allies exactly a century ago...
