back in the eighties when there was still west- and east-germany, and the threat of total nuclear annihilation was still strong there were nice things though. e.g. rockpalast, an iconic tv rock show that featured great musicians of all kinds (everything except of jazz) who still were relatively unknown in germany. that was always an all night event for me and my friends, coming together all night watching the show on tv and recording it from the radio broadcast on cassettes at the same time. in particular i remember two shows very fondly: the one show with zz top on their first appearance on german tv, and this show here.
this show featured joe jackson with the live perfomance of his fantastic album
night and day (i've never seen so many drunken germans in my life). that was already fantastic.
but the ultimate thing was king sunny ade. i had never before heard this kind of african musik in my life. it was a total revelation! his band came second and i was stunned beyond expectation.
this tape of king sunny ade became one on my favourites and it was devoured in the early 90s by a vicious car audio system. luckily there is the internet nowadays so i can get the sound back at least.
so here for my enterntainment (and yours too): king sunny ade and his african beats in rockpalast in 1983 ....
