An Afghan military helicopter flies over a snow-covered valley along the road through the Salang Pass, covering a Soviet convoy carrying food and fuel to Kabul, Jan. 30, 1989. The convoy was attacked shortly thereafter by the Mujahideen, but was forced to withdraw after the Afghan troops returned fire.
