Jupiter's Ruth2 and Roth2 Wiki: Mesh clothes for Ruth2

Finding mesh clothes for bodies from the Ruth2 family to wear can be hard, more so for users who refuse to put stolen Athena clothes on their avatars. After all, you’re already using a legal mesh body made in OpenSim for OpenSim, why fall back to illegally imported Second Life content for clothing then? Usually, the answer is because that’s all they can find in freebie stores, that and stolen Second Life clothes for other stolen Second Life bodies.

But just because the big and popular freebie stores aren’t chock-full of Ruth 2.0 or RuthToo or Ruth2 v4 clothes, doesn’t mean there aren’t any mesh clothes for these bodies to wear except for Athena clothes that happen to fit halfway.

There are actually original mesh clothes rigged for Ruth 2.0, RuthToo or LuvMyBod. Alternatively, mesh clothes made for the system body can fill in some gaps.

And there are even shoes rigged for Ruth 2.0 or LuvMyBod. These fit better than Athena shoes, they’re easier to put on than unrigged sculpt or mesh shoes which have to be positioned or even resized, and there are shoes for Ruth 2.0 which you won’t get for Athena.

Clothes rigged for the Ruth2 family

In contrast to what pro-copybotting, anti-legal content propaganda claims, mesh clothes for the Ruth2 family have been made and are still being made in OpenSim. However, these clothes aren’t easy to find. They’re usually only offered by their creators, and they’re completely absent from the big freebie sims.

Usually, the creators of these clothes don’t even advertise them, especially not items that aren’t new anymore. This makes finding them even harder.

So here is a list of places where mesh clothes for the Ruth2 family can be found.

(Re)textured clothes

If the existing choice of clothes rigged for the Ruth2 family isn’t sufficient, mesh clothes made for the system body can fill in the gaps.

Mesh sources

There are three main sources for untextured base meshes:

  • Damien Fate made an assortment of fitted mesh templates when rigged/fitted mesh was still new. It was originally made for Second Life, but after fitted mesh had been rendered obsolete by mesh bodies becoming available, he made them available freely, also for OpenSim.
Shadow maps and UV maps are included, as are alpha masks. However, it’s strongly advised for users of bodies which support Bakes-on-Mesh to make custom alpha masks. The included alpha masks are made for the system body and along the philosophy of alpha-ing out everything that’s covered by the mesh instead of only where clipping may occur. On BoM-enabled bodies from the Ruth2 family, they may affect body areas which are plainly visible, and alpha-ing out legs under skirts or dresses right from the hem upwards is even less desirable today with mesh bodies than it was in 2014 and earlier with the system body.
The templates can be downloaded from Outworldz.
  • Linda Kellie, mostly known for her old layer clothes, actually became a rigged mesh pioneer in the mid-2010s when she started working on her Clutterfly product line. Unlike Damien Fate, she also offered textured clothes based on her own templates. When she started, fitted mesh didn’t exist yet, so she made all her meshes in five rigged sizes. After fitted mesh had been introduced, it became a sixth size for her newer clothes. However, while some texturers textured all sizes, others only textured those that fit their own avatars or a selection of three sizes.
The meshes themselves can be of varying quality. Most work well, but some may break open in places when the avatar moves. The ARC impact can vary from a bit over 10,000 to half a million in the case of the Ruffled Bottom Dress. Shadow maps are provided with the mesh templates for those who want to make their own textures, but some of them require some optimisation due to less-than-optimal UV mapping. Textured clothes almost always come with alpha masks, and mesh templates come with template textures for alpha masks, but the same applies to them as to Damien Fate alpha mask.
Both templates and textured clothes are available in-world at any instance of Clutterfly, and there are also third-party resellers which offer either or both. Clutterfly templates come with shadow maps and alpha mask textures, but again, custom alpha masks are recommended.
  • Hyacinth Jean made four construction kits for LuvMyBod clothes, one for tops, one for tight dresses/skirts, one for jeans/trousers/shorts, one for hosiery (LuvMyBod doesn’t have native BoM support). The meshes are actually offsets of LuvMyBod. They come without textures, Hyacinth has made separate ready-to-use texture boxes, but they are compatible with textures for classic layer clothes.
In spite of being made for LuvMyBod, they can be worn on the other bodies from the Ruth2 family. On Ruth2 v4, they will require alpha masks, though, and there might still be slight clipping issues, so they shouldn’t be worn with a bare midriff. Alpha masks aren’t provided as these clothes were made for pre-BoM mesh bodies.
The construction kits are available on the Groovyverse welcome sim.

As Damien Fate and Linda Kellie created their clothes for the system body, they may make avatars based on Ruth2-family bodies look a little pudgy. Also, not all of their mesh clothes are guaranteed to work on the Ruth2 family. Especially most Clutterfly tops and dresses don’t work with Ruth2 v4; still, some do.

Combinations

As far as combinations go, Damien Fate provides the most useful tops. They can be combined with Damien Fate bottoms, most Linda Kellie bottoms and the skirts which Klarabella Karamell has made in 2022; some of the latter were explicitly made to be worn with Damien Fate tops. In fact, Linda Kellie bottoms and Klarabella Karamell skirts may be easier to combine with Damien Fate tops than Damien Fate bottoms; in fact, the mini-skirts in the Deva Moda sakko outfit boxes are Clutterfly meshes because Damien’s own mini-skirts tend to clip into his suit jackets.

Both Damien Fate and Clutterfly bottoms should not be worn with a bare midriff. Due to Ruth2 bodies being slimmer than the mesh body, they’re likely to leave a gap between the body and the garment below the belly.

Hyacinth’s clothes are very tight-fitting because they were made from offsets of her own LuvMyBod body. These offsets were created at various distances from the body, so it’s possible to wear at least two of them over one another if necessary. After all, non-BoM bodies like LuvMyBod have to rely on meshes for underwear and hosiery as well. Hyacinth’s bottoms aren’t exactly easy to combine with rather loosely-fitting Damien Fate tops, but they can work well with tops rigged for the Ruth2 family.

Shoes rigged for the Ruth2 family

Like Ruth2 clothes, Ruth2 shoes usually can’t be found on any of the big mixed freebie sims. But once you find them, you’ll discover one advantage of Ruth2 over any of the Second Life bodies which have been taken to OpenSim. And that is the availability of medium-heeled shoes.
