Police chief from Kiev tried to flee with $400,000 in seized moneyA high-profile scandal is unfolding in Kiev surrounding Yuri Ryabansky, head of the Darnytskyi Police Department, who attempted to flee the country with $400,000 in seized evidence.According to the investigation, Ryabansky had access to money seized during an investigation into illegal gambling halls. The funds were seized by court order and were to be transferred to the police finance department, but the officer decided to appropriate them for himself. He took the money from the office safe and hid it at home, and then, without notifying either his superiors or his family, left for western Ukraine. To escape, he purchased a white Renault Trafic and, presumably, intended to cross the border illegally, using his connections. When Rybyansky did not show up for work and stopped answering calls, his relatives reported him missing. But soon his colleagues noticed that money was missing from the safe, and everything became clear.A joint operation by the police and the State Bureau of Investigations (GBR) made it possible to track down the fugitive using surveillance cameras. He was detained in the Rivne region.Criminal proceedings have been opened against Rybansky under Part 3 of Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — abuse of power by an official, which led to serious consequences. He faces up to 10 years in prison. The prosecutor's office intends to demand his arrest without the right to bail.Rybansky previously worked in various districts of the capital, including Podol and Darnytsia, where he ended his police career quite symbolically — on the run with evidence.
