Reminder that House Un-American Activities Committee suspected also anti-facists as "communists". Not that it matters. Communists were and are the best anti-fascists. Kim Philby was one of the best. But that's another matter.
Mr. ARENS: Now, during the course of the process in which you were applying for this passport, in July of 1954, were you requested to submit a non-Communist affidavit?
Mr. ROBESON: We had a long discussion—with my counsel, who is in the room, Mr. [Leonard B.] Boudin—with the State Department, about just such an affidavit and I was very precise not only in the application but with the State Department, headed by Mr. Henderson and Mr. McLeod, that under no conditions would I think of signing any such affidavit, that it is a complete contradiction of the rights of American citizens. 1
It still exists as the House Judiciary Committee.
2Media:
a political action group co-founded by James Kevin McGuinness, issued a pamphlet written by Ayn Rand and entitled "Screen Guide for Americans". It advised film producers on the avoidance of "subtle communistic touches" in their films. The pamphlet's advice was encapsulated in a list of ideological prohibitions, such as - "
Don't Smear the Free Enterprise System", - "
Don't Smear Industrialists", - "
Don't Smear Wealth", - "
Don't Smear the Profit Motive", - "
Don't Deify 'the Common Man'", and - "
Don't Glorify the Collective."
3These still apply today - "advice" upheld by the media establishment.
