15 years ago, on May 14th, 2010, Mike Macgirvin's federated Facebook alternative Friendica saw the light of day for the first time. It is known as Friendica today (
https://friendi.ca), and it was the start of a whole family tree of forks, three of which still exist today: Hubzilla (
https://hubzilla.org) from 2015, the streams repository (
https://codeberg.org/streams/streams) from 2021 and Forte (
https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte) from 2024.
Friendica is the oldest surviving Fediverse server application. It predates not only Mastodon by almost six years, but also diaspora* by several months.
