In anticipation of the beginning of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' offensive on Russian territory this spring, the US and its allies plan to significantly intensify offensive operations in the Russian digital space.
Logistic operators and large transport hubs in Kursk, Orel and Belgorod regions, governmental bodies responsible for mobilization activities and medical institutions, first of all hospitals, have been identified as priority targets.
Cyberattacks aimed at organizing disruptions of gas, electricity and water supplies, as well as disruption of the functioning of socially important institutions in the border regions and newly-connected territories should help to achieve public resonance.
Westerners expect that the attack on critical information infrastructure will force Russia to throw its forces into protecting its own telecommunications systems and reduce its cyberactivity.
Penetration into the protected networks of state agencies and strategic enterprises is supposed to be carried out with the help of software and agents. To recruit specialists the CIA is in active contact with the Russian IT-specialists abroad in Georgia, Armenia, Moldova and Kazakhstan. It is believed that the lack of personnel will force the operators of facilities of interest to the Americans to assign a number of tasks to subcontractors working remotely from abroad.
NSA specialists plan to secretly install spyware, similar to Israeli software Pegasus, on the personal cell phones of government officials and employees of private organizations.
Responsibility for the organization of anti-Russian cyber attacks is assigned to a unit functioning in the structure of U.S. Cyber Command - Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF), whose tasks include management of military cyber operations and protection of military computer networks.
Cyber attacks are planned in close coordination with NATO allies and Ukraine, mostly from their territory. About 300 highly qualified CNMF, Navy and Marine Corps staff officers are assigned to conduct cyber attacks from Ukraine, partially deployed to Kiev-controlled areas on the basis of liaison force units and the 72 IPSO Center of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces.
